Marilyn Neuhart's Dolls & Sara Fanelli

The beauty of Sarah Fanelli work its that I never get tired of looking at it, her work is amazing and sometimes I do wish I could think in the way she does? How she come up with them amazing piece of work? How she pick the right materials? Colour Harmon's? How much of a risk taker is she?
All these questions that one day I hope can be answered, but for know her work has a lot of impact on me as an Illustrator, cutting them risk and really seeing and experimenting of her work.
I hope to find some of her books to order so yet again I have her work in my hand if ever I need inspiration.

When I was first introduced to Neuharts work my heart just melted and I felt an instont connection between her work and mine, the humour, pattern and pure love for what she does really capture my mind and really inspired my 3D piece for my brief.

Another Illustrator that really capture my attention and was the reason for wanting to do a wallpaper piece and explore in depth about what Screen Printing could do for my work. Jenny Bower ( Peep-show Collective Limited). I could talk forever about Bowers work, but what I will say is that her collaboration with graphic design and Illustration is unique, its not too graphic and at the same time keeps the free hand appeal to her work. The us of colour, humour and imagination is clean and thoughtful.
(I also have the knew 2012 addition of the PeepShow Book which she is in, so I can always keep her near by for reference and inspiration)

Always keep them handy?

Along my travels as a up coming Illustrator I always try to look back at other materials, artist and people who have inspired me on my journeys and Charles Harper is a consent reminder in my work, I always look at the us of simple shapes and not over complicating the design with too many elements. Looking at the quality of the shape and the space around the figure.
The us of colours and texture are simple but amazing capture by the shapes and colour combination he uses.
( I have already order his book from Amazon, so I can have his work with me always).

This artist not only influences my work in general but epically on the Brief that I have been working on over the Summer creating my narrative sequence as well has progressing with my story and changing an adding element.
Steffen Larson is on of the most experimental and interesting artist Iv ever some across, these 3 images allow me to look out of my comfort zone and be more experimental with my imagination and humour within my work, and allowing me to look at DEVELOPMENT my skills as an illustrator more freely.

My summer Brief

This Summer brief was based on
The Book of Imaginary Beings by Jorge Luis Borges
The book itself introduces all strange creatures and exciting stories into your mind and imagination, reading though the book I found the BALDANDER this is the quote.

Hans Sachus ( 1494) (1576) of Nuremburg by that passage in the Odyssey in which Menelaus pursues the Egyptian god Proteus, who changed himself into a lion, a serpent, a panther a huge wild boar, a tree and a flowing water. Some ninety years after Sach’s death, Baldanders makes a new appearance in the last book of the picaresquefantasic novel by Grimmelshausen, The Adventuresome Simplicissim

In the midst of the wood, the hero comes upon a stone statue which seems to him and idol from some old Germanic Temple. He touches it and the statue tells him he is the Baldanders
and thereupon
takes the forms of a man, of an oak tree, of a fat sausage, of a flower, of a blossoming branch, of a mulberry bush,
he also makes himself into a
secretary and writes these words from the Revelation of ST John ‘ I am the first and the last’
which are the key to the coded document in which he leaves the hero with his instruction.
He tramples on a heap of masks that stand for the succession of shapes he has taken. In his hand he opens a book showing pictures of a crown, a sailing boat, a goblet, a child, a pair of dice, a fool’s cap with bells
Baldanders are often described as having a human torso and head, having either a single goat leg attached to the hip or a goat leg and a bird leg together as well as large bird wings and a fish tail.

These photography are all featured in my sketchbook along with my Sense of Place sketchbook with Reference images and materials.
This first image was influenced by my DoveStone visit, I wanted to create a SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE technique to set the scene and the location, by adding simple shapes and not over complicating the story of the story.

THE BALDANDER

Baldanders are often described as having a human torso and head, having either a single goat leg attached to the hip or a goat leg and a bird leg together as well as large bird wings and a fish tail.

Creating the creature was one of the most exciting part of the project, allowing my Sense of Place book to gide me it allowed me to look at the creature with more freedom, and the final outcome became more free and less controlled outcome.

The next part of the story was the writing of the Baldander to the Hero
he also makes himself into a secretary and writes these words from the Revelation of ST John
I am the first and the last’

I theses two examples was a mixture of simple shapes and the other was of collarge, the outcome of both I felt was very successful and both of them deserve to be featured in my development process.

END....
he tramples on a heap of masks that stand for the succession of shapes he has taken. In this hand an open book showing pictures of a crown, a sailing boat, a goblet, a tower, a child, a pair of dice, a fool’s cap with bells and a piece of ordnance.

These masked where influenced by other project The Circus Project, looking at reference materials like elephants, patterns, materials and reference images for circus masked. These sketches and collages are found in my Sense Of Place book.

n this hand an open book showing pictures of a crown, a sailing boat, a goblet, a child, a pair of dice, a fool’s cap with bells and a piece of ordnance.

This image was produced using the same concept ( Simple but effective) I wanted to add simple shapes to complement the collage and add contrast to my work.

These drawing where produced in stick and ink and in pen also, I didn't add collage into these drawings because I wanted to add some variety to my work and I felt it would become to over powered.

FINAL OUTCOME
I decided to add more frames to finish off the story, I felt that the hole story needed a beginning, middle and end, and not to be cut off to soon...
These are my 8 frames story about the BALDANDER

ICE AGE 3 18 FRAMES SCREEN SHOT
My second brief was based on choosing a favourite film and drawing my favourite scenes. I chose ice ages because not only is it full of humour, excitement and adventure it was the us of design and graphic's in the making of ice age as well as the story. This allowed me to challenge my abilities as an Illustrator and gave more variety in my work, that's why I sketched the frames.
These are four from my 18 frames ( the rest are featured in my sketch book or research file).

Trips, Exhibitions, Talks & Galleries

These trips and visits to exhibitions allowed me to keep undated in the field of art and design, taking inspiration for my project brief as well as linking it with project that I will have in the future.
Manchester Craft Centre
Lily Greenwood
Greenwoods work has always influence me during my foundation year at Level 3. Travelling back again it was really enjoyable and exciting to see that Greenwood still has her own studio space and is still producing her work.
This give me confidence and allows me to be more strong minded that I will be in her shoes one day, selling work and creating art for the public.

This Visit was based on my new brief and I wanted to add more photography into my research and Development as well as drawing and collage. From these photograph is allowed me to set a location for my story and a starting point.
