This Summer brief was based on
The Book of
Imaginary Beings by Jorge Luis Borges
The book itself introduces all strange creatures and exciting stories into your mind and imagination, reading though the book I found the BALDANDER this is the quote.
Hans Sachus ( 1494) (1576) of Nuremburg by that passage
in the Odyssey in which Menelaus pursues the Egyptian god Proteus, who changed
himself into a lion, a serpent, a panther a huge wild boar, a tree and a
flowing water. Some ninety years after Sach’s death, Baldanders makes a new appearance
in the last book of the picaresquefantasic novel by Grimmelshausen, The
Adventuresome Simplicissim
In the midst of the wood, the hero comes upon a stone
statue which seems to him and idol from some old Germanic Temple. He touches it
and the statue tells him he is the Baldanders
and thereupon
takes the forms of
a man, of an oak tree, of a fat sausage, of a flower, of a blossoming branch, of a mulberry bush,
he also makes
himself into a
secretary and writes these words from the Revelation of ST John
‘ I am the first and the last’,
which are the key to the coded document in
which he leaves the hero with his instruction.
He tramples on a heap of masks that stand for the succession of shapes he has taken. In his hand he opens a book showing pictures of a crown, a sailing boat, a goblet, a child, a pair of dice, a fool’s cap with bells
Baldanders are often described as having a human torso
and head, having either a single goat leg attached to the hip or a goat leg and
a bird leg together as well as large bird wings and a fish tail.
These photography are all featured in my sketchbook along with my Sense of Place sketchbook with Reference images and materials.
This first image was influenced by my DoveStone visit, I wanted to create a SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE technique to set the scene and the location, by adding simple shapes and not over complicating the story of the story.

Creating the creature was one of the most exciting part of the project, allowing my Sense of Place book to gide me it allowed me to look at the creature with more freedom, and the final outcome became more free and less controlled outcome.
The next part of the story was the writing of the Baldander to the Hero
he also makes himself into a secretary and writes these words from the Revelation of ST John
‘I am the first and the last’
I theses two examples was a mixture of simple shapes and the other was of collarge, the outcome of both I felt was very successful and both of them deserve to be featured in my development process.
END....
he tramples on a heap of masks that stand for the succession of shapes he has taken. In this hand an open book showing pictures of a crown, a sailing boat, a goblet, a tower, a child, a pair of dice, a fool’s cap with bells and a piece of ordnance.
These masked where influenced by other project The Circus Project, looking at reference materials like elephants, patterns, materials and reference images for circus masked. These sketches and collages are found in my Sense Of Place book.
n this hand an open book showing pictures of a crown, a sailing boat, a goblet, a child, a pair of dice, a fool’s cap with bells and a piece of ordnance.
This image was produced using the same concept ( Simple but effective) I wanted to add simple shapes to complement the collage and add contrast to my work.
These drawing where produced in stick and ink and in pen also, I didn't add collage into these drawings because I wanted to add some variety to my work and I felt it would become to over powered.
FINAL OUTCOME
I decided to add more frames to finish off the story, I felt that the hole story needed a beginning, middle and end, and not to be cut off to soon...

ICE AGE 3 18 FRAMES SCREEN SHOT
My second brief was based on choosing a favourite film and drawing my favourite scenes. I chose ice ages because not only is it full of humour, excitement and adventure it was the us of design and graphic's in the making of ice age as well as the story. This allowed me to challenge my abilities as an Illustrator and gave more variety in my work, that's why I sketched the frames.
These are four from my 18 frames ( the rest are featured in my sketch book or research file).
Screen shot 1, 2/18
Screen shot 3, 4/18
